4tk10 or tk11Jul 12, 2009
By J. Look
My short answer is if you don't have a need to use the 18650 battery, then get the TK10.

I just bought three Fenix flashlights, including a TK11, and it is the one I regret. It was meant to replace my 1998 Surefire 6P with Cree drop-in. I narrowed my choices down to the TK10 and TK11 and so I asked someone "which I should get between the two." He suggested I get the TK11 since it could take the 18650 battery. Okay, so that's what I did.

When I got it in my hands and had some time to play with it, I realized all the things I didn't like about it, the TK10 didn't have. First off, I don't really care for the ring used for the cigar hold and it catches on things, although I am getting used to it. I know it just comes off, but unlike the TK10, there is no replacement band to prevent damage to the treads or getting crud on the O-ring. Perhaps not a big deal, but I intend to use it in the field alot and it is subject to drops in the wilderness.

Next, I think I am disappointed in the beam artifacts. I am not such a picky dude, but it does not seem as nice as my Cree drop-in for the 6p. Okay, again not a big deal. The TK10 is said to have a different reflector which has a nicer beam. I'll have to perhaps just let that one go.

Then, there is the cooling fins. Like the ring, they catch on stuff like the case and I bet if I drop it in the mud, it's gonna be hard to clean, most irritating. And they look ugly to me. The TK10 does not have them.

I did not think getting a supply of 18650 batteries would be so difficult here since several of my co-workers have them, but when I try, it's really a pain in the butt. As it turns out, [...], which I don't plan to do, so the 18650 feature is not so beneficial to me.

Oh, and at the time I bought the TK11, the TK10 was nine dollars less.

Overall, the TK11 is a solid and good flashlight, I just wish I had bought the TK10 instead.

5Awesome!!!Jan 06, 2009

This is an amazing flashlight from Fenix, the 18650 lasts quite a long time, I have been using this for an hour or so for nearly a week, both in general and max mode, still the batteries have juice, it is very bright when used as a candle, aimed at the ceiling. Can light up a tree and my neighbor's house nearly a block away, if you're planning to buy this, get the Tenergy 18650 rechargeable batteries too, with the electronic regulator, the Tenergy charger too works well.

5Great quality and PerformanceSep 04, 2008

This is a quality Unit that belies that its made in China. If from the US or Germany this Light would probably cost 3X the price.. Very satisfied. If you need a small Light that is as bright as larger units, this the one for you. I was worried when I realized I had ordered a product made in China but Trust me, This little Torch is feels like BMW all over and a real pleasure to work with. A Score.

5Excellent in all aspectsApr 24, 2009

The Fenix TK11 LED Flashlight is very well-designed and built. It's sturdy, has full O-ring seals, is small and very bright. It's perhaps a bit heavier than it needs to be, but being slightly overbuilt probably means it's much stronger than it needs to be also. The front glass is thick, anti-reflective, probably tempered, etc. The tailswitch can be operated momentary by pressing slightly or clicked full on or full off. As noted, the tailcap can be unscrewed slightly to disable and lock out the switch to prevent accidental activation. Beam focus is fixed, with a good central spot and clear, bright outer ring.

It has a low and high brightness ("Turbo") mode, changed by rotating the light assembly. It's probably better to switch off before changing modes, since the current demands are pretty different. It appears that the change works by engaging a second set of contacts on the printed circuit board to the main body. When disengaged, the circuit ground is made only through the aluminum threads, so the brighter Turbo mode may be electrically a bit better, lower resistance, etc.

Due to its size and shape, it is generally most convenient to hold and operate overhand. This will be true of any small light with a tailswitch and "cigar grip" ring, which is also meant to accompany a certain style of tactical pistol use. I'm keeping the grip ring on as a reference point and for added grip security.

The TK11 uses one 18650 Lithium Ion or two CR123A Lithium (non-rechargable) or two CR123A Lithium Ion (rechargable) batteries, which will often need to be purchased separately, as will an appropriate charger for them. Can be used with disposable CR123A Lithium batteries, which have a very long shelf life, but can't be recharged. Don't try to recharge the disposable CR123A batteries as they may explode and cause a very dangerous Lithium metal fire.

Most other LED lights will only work with 18650 or CR123A batteries since the battery diameters are different by a couple millimeters and the voltages are different. The TK11 is somewhat unusual in that it can use either type of battery. As should be expected from a fully-voltage and -current regulated design, the TK11 does work with the 3.7 Volt CR123As, even though they're a higher voltage than the 3.0 volt disposables, So it's compatible with all three Lithium battery types. The smaller-diameter CR123As do not rattle in the case.

I'm running UltraFire and SpiderFire batteries and a DSD charger found on eBay, but the Tenergy batteries and charger found on Amazon and eBay should also work well. The DSD and Tenergy universal chargers may be identical.

Excellent light. Highly recommended.

5Fenix TK11 FlashlightFeb 22, 2009

After a month of everyday use with the TK11 I am pleased to recommend this flashlight to anyone. I own a remodeling company and put it through dust, mud, and water daily. The Lithium Ion battery has lasted me a month with everyday use, sometimes the flashlight is on for a half hour while I am working under a kitchen sink, or in a closet. The only thing I think could improve this flashlight for my needs is the ability to go from 225 to 20 lumens. 20 lumens would be nice for walking through the house at night with just enough light to see and read.
