Nitecore Defender Infinity vs Surefire Z2LMar 16, 2010
By Michael Akerman Short version, the Nitecore Defender Infinity is a great light for everyday carry.
It's about half the size, weight, and price of the Surefire I used to carry, and I'd estimate the light output to be about equivalent when I run NiMH batteries in it.
Total on high is about 1 hour versus the 10 that I got on the Surefire. For everyday carry the shorter run time is not a huge problem, because I rarely operate the light for more than a minute or two at a time, so I'd only have to swap batteries once a month at my usual rate of usage, and with NiMH batteries that's pennies per charge versus the $4 per pair of CR123A. (Granted with my typical usage, that might be only $8 per year with the CR123A, since I don't run it a lot.)
I still plan to use the Surefire Z2L for wilderness search and rescue, as if you were to set the Nitecore dim enough to last 10 hours, the output wouldn't be high enough for SAR work in my opinion.
So in summary, it's great for everyday usage a few minutes at a time, when you can swap batteries from a charger conveniently, maybe not the best for long term constant-on usage.
I think this would burn though alkaline batteries pretty fast so rechargeables is a must for economic and environmental reasons. With this light and a 12 volt NiMH car charger, you'd have a pretty good solution for power outages. Probably best to get the 20 minute car charger so you can charge batteries faster than the Nitecore can drain them.
